Not everyone knows what a cistern is.  When I was growing up in Ortonville, the old cistern in our basement had been repurposed into a Bomb Shelter/ Fruit Cellar.  The newer cistern was outside, next to the house, and collected soft rainwater for bathing and laundry.  When I was unruly, this cistern also doubled asthe prison.  No, my mother did not put me in the cistern, I was just ordered to sit on it until further notice.  My time out was visible to all the neighbors – part of my re-education, I’m sure. 

In some countries, water catchments like cisterns are illegal because water rights have been granted to corporations.  In fact, Colorado is arguing about “who owns the rain?” right now.

Water Stewardship is a major focus among sustainability practitioners.  Many believe we must do a better job of holding water where it falls; that we must use and share it wisely.   We all require access to safe clean water. 

But, Sustainability Thinking goes well beyond water.
