Downtown Willmar is looking a little more
beautiful these days.
Downtown business owners and groups and the city of Willmar are cooperating
and pooling their funds and efforts this summer to place hanging flower
baskets, signs and banners on street lights and poles in and around
downtown.
The money to buy 16 hanging petunia flower
baskets was provided by Main Street Willmar and downtown businesses.
The flowers were purchased
from and hung by Stacy’s Nursery on light pole brackets provided
by the city.
Beautiful downtown
Another bunch of 15 flower baskets will be purchased from I & M
Landscaping Nursery. Brackets for the second bunch of flowers were
purchased by downtown business owners.
The Willmar Fire Department has agreed to water the flower baskets
every day Monday through Friday.
Red and yellow triangular banners were bought by Main Street Willmar
and hung by the city.
Also, the city placed “Historic Downtown Willmar’’ signs
at downtown entrances. The signs were produced as a project by the
Willmar Design Center.
Edna Wolfswinkle, a downtown business owner and Willmar Design Center
board member, said the first 16 flower baskets were placed at four
downtown intersections.
“That’s what we had money enough to start out with,’’ she
said. “We’re very happy to get as much as we did, and hopefully
we can get some more baskets hung. We have to work a little at a time
because the city only has time put up so many brackets at a time.
“But they promised that they would put them up for us, and if
we can get a hold of more baskets, we’ll hang as many as we’ve
got money for.’’
Wolfswinkle is pleased the fire department agreed to water the flowers.
“I like the cooperation between the city and the Main Street,
the Design Center and the fire department,’’ she said. “We’re
all part of the business downtown, so all of us should participate
in working with beautifying downtown and being interested in developing
it.’’
