About Willmar Design Center
The Willmar Design Center is a local nonprofit focusing on revitalizing Downtown Willmar and making it a destination for all.
Looking for new ideas to improve the city, a group of volunteers enlisted the help of the Minnesota Design Team in 2005. The Minnesota Design Team specializes in helping communities plan their future through grassroots involvement, volunteerism and quality design. Out of these sessions and public meetings, the Willmar Design Center was formed and goals were established.
In April 2012, after a series of community meetings hosted by the City of Willmar and the Willmar Design Center, the Downtown Plan was created and approved by the Willmar City Council. The WDC began the process of building it’s work plan based on the Downtown Plan. 2013 will be the first full year of the joint plan, with Technical Assistance funds provided by Minnesota Main Street through the WDC. Parking Assessment, Gateway Design and Trail Link are currently being studied.
The extension of the Glacial Lakes State Trail to Selvig Park downtown is currently on the construction schedule for 2013.
